Lawn aeration

There are many methods to ‘aerate’ a lawn and attempt to increase the flow of oxygen and moisture to the root system.

Typically, a loud and heavy ‘corer’ was used to remove plugs of dirt and open up the surface to allow increased penetration of water and fertiliser. This method still exists, but where major aeration is needed, we prefer to use the ‘scarifying’ process which is marginally less invasive, and also extremely effective.

Our commercial grade scarifier works below the lawn surface, with multiple hard metal blades penetrating the lawn layer. This provides the added benefit of dethatching, so the lawn receives a double boost of future benefits, widely opening up the root system to absorb the benefits of nutrients, moisture and oxygen.

Scarifying is a fairly high impact process, ideal for an annual lawn renovation,
and may include:
Thatch removalĀ (removing the dead and dying organic material suffocating the lawn)
Removal of shallow rooted grass plants and weeds
Removal of the grass canopy (which is useful particularly when top dressing a lawn, as it ensures a good knit between new and original topdressing)
Works down to 30mm in some cases, so remains within or below the thatch layer

Talk to us if you feel your lawn is looking tired and compacted. Any time during your lawn’s growing season is ideal to consider lawn scarifying, which will provide the aeration and nutrients your lawn will thrive on.
